THOP mentor

Coach is a common word that is often used with sports and assisting others. In this document, we will consider “coach” synonymous to “mentor”. Virat Kohli, one of the world’s top batsman, has a mentor. Why? Is the mentor a better batsman than Virat? Absolutely, not!! Then why does Virat Kohli want to learn from an inferior batsman? Also, why do the top sportsmen and sportswomen have mentors? Why do engineers not have mentors? Is it because engineers do not want to be top in their fields?

Should we all have mentors?  Should only some have mentors?  Who should have mentors and who should not?  How can a mentor help?

Mentors enable the following:

In US, mentorship happens at all ages. Children are part swimming classes since the age of three and even earlier. Children are also part of karate, chess, basketball, dancing, singing, volleyball and more. Robotics program is completely supported by parents. Parents assist the students in technical matter, leadership roles, collaborating with each other and also arrange food for the students on long days. Sunday yoga classes were also organized by the parents, where parents prepare for these Sunday classes and then encourage young men and women to participate, lead and collaborate. Parents are mentors.

What type of a mentor do we want?

Coach is a common word that is often used with sports and assisting others. In this document, we will consider “coach” synonymous to “mentor”. Virat Kohli, one of the world’s top batsman, has a mentor. Why? Is the mentor a better batsman than Virat? Absolutely, not!! Then why does Virat Kohli want to learn from an inferior batsman? Mentors should spend a minimum of 30 minutes a week with the student.

This is what we are thinking a mentor should do:

1. Values should be discussed. Our ecell values can be found at this link – /know-more/

“We respect each other, see beauty in each other and never judge, provide value to others, take responsibility in everything we do and are accountable to each other, believe in team spirit. We never criticize, complain or condemn anything or anybody. We spread happiness by being grateful to others and always strive to become our best versions through continuous learning.”

2. Goals should be identified.  It can be a 2-year goal or it can be a daily goal or even an hourly goal.

We feel that to reach any goal at any time, there are infinite paths.  The more we understand who we are, our strengths, our weaknesses, our culture, our values, the more we will have clarity on the path.  Choosing a path is a journey.  We need to be flexible as we might have to change the path

3.  Actions

With these values are as
the backdrop, and our goals in the forefront, we need to take actions which
take us towards our goals.  We should
constantly question whether our actions are in tune with our goals.

Mentors should focus on these values, goals and actions with students.

Thank you for being a mentor.
